How to: Guided Reading 101 - posted in Caregiver Cafe: Hi friends. This is a post that Jet (Little) and I (CG) wrote up together. ^^ Recently we realized that storytime can be done in very different ways. Of course it should be just that, but we wanted to share how we do storytime. This may be particularly enjoyed by Littles that like to be involved or may space out when being read to.

  1. This is a comprehensive 47 page unit that has a variety of worksheets to run a comprehensive guided reading and student center activity program in your classroom. Included in the unit are: Sample Guided Reading Lesson Plan, Guided Reading Lesson Plan Blacklines, Reading Mini Lesson Scope and Sequenc.
  2. A 3 week unit of work to use alongside the Bug Club book ‘101 Ways to Save the Planet Before Bedtime’ for Year 4. A great way to meet non-fiction objectives and engage the more scientific fact-loving readers in Year 4 (could also be used for year 3).

  • Description:This session has been added due to high demand in order to accommodate more participants. It is a repeat of the June 28 session.

Day one (July 6) is an introduction to Guided Reading using the resources from Jan Richardson. The focus will be using formative assessment and designing differentiated instruction for different levels of readers. Participants will leave day 1 with ideas for preparing for, planning and progress monitoring Guided Reading.

Day 2(Sept 14) will take participants into using data to effectively plan each part of the Guided Reading lesson, diving deeper into prompting, teaching points and word study. Participants will receive the text, “The Next Steps in Guided Reading” by Jan Richardson. One registration will cover both day 1(July 6) and day 2 ( Sept. 21).
